HMFIC? Really? I can’t even pronounce it! I’m really appreciative of George’s largesse, though creating and organizing useful content may become an ongoing challenge. The premise of this site is that your genetics have adapted you to your ancestral diet. Certainly this was relevant in former times, when most people never ventured more than perhaps 25 miles from their place of birth. Today people are highly mobile and may go half a world away just for a vacation. Food is transported between continents for economics, variety and taste. Then again, what is one’s genetic makeup? So many of us are inter-racial and inter-ethnic! Many of us are not even living on our birth continent.
DNA can tell part of the story, but certainly not all of it.
There are many factors that play into living in congruence with one’s genome. Certainly diet is one. Location is a big one too – including latitude, longitude(yes, it matters), and let’s not forget elevation! Close relationships, especially sleeping in the same bed can have an effect. Women living in close proximity tend to have their periods synchronize. There’s the matter of epigenetics too! Epigenetic factors can have enormous effects on gene expression. The actual mechanisms of gene expression are somewhat understood, though I do believe that there’s a lot more yet to be understood.
I suspect that this site will expand in scope, since there’s so much that’s interwoven in biology and medical science. That’s a good thing as long as we can maintain some level of focus.
